Italy Vaping Laws Explained

You land in Rome, walk out of the airport,...

You unwrap a fresh coil, fit it, fill up, and take a confident first puff. Instead of flavour, you get a harsh, scorched hit that tastes like burnt toast. The coil is not faulty. It was never given the chance to soak up e-liquid before it was heated, and once cotton scorches, that taste rarely leaves. Priming is the short routine that stops this happening, and it costs you a few drops of e-liquid and a few minutes of patience.

What priming actually does inside the coil

A vape coil is a small heating wire wrapped around a wick, usually cotton. The wire only does its job safely when the cotton around it is fully soaked. Dry cotton heats fast, scorches, and holds that burnt flavour through every puff that follows. Priming simply means saturating the wick completely before the coil is fired for the first time.

This matters for every new coil, not just your first one. A coil that has sat in a drawer, a pod filled for the first time, and a replacement coil fitted into a tank all start dry. The same rule applies after a long break too. If a tank has been left empty or a pod has run dry, the wick needs time to re-soak before you vape on it again.

One important exception: sealed disposable vapes arrive pre-filled and pre-soaked, so there is nothing to prime. If you are unsure whether your device even has a replaceable coil, our guide to the best disposable vapes explains which devices are designed to be used straight out of the box and which ones use pods or tanks you maintain yourself.

How long should you wait after filling?

There is no single magic number, because thicker e-liquid soaks more slowly than thin e-liquid, and larger coils hold more cotton. The table below is a practical starting point. When in doubt, wait longer. An extra five minutes never hurt a coil, but one rushed puff can finish it.

Coil or e-liquid type Suggested minimum wait Why it takes that long
Small pod coil with thin 50/50 e-liquid 5 minutes Thin liquid moves through small cotton pads quickly
Standard pod coil with nic salt e-liquid 5-10 minutes Most pod cotton saturates well inside this window
Sub-ohm tank coil with high VG e-liquid 10-15 minutes Thick liquid needs longer to reach the centre of a dense wick
Large mesh coil with high VG e-liquid 15-20 minutes Mesh coils pack in more cotton, so full saturation takes longer
Any coil after a dry spell or refill from empty 10 minutes Cotton that dried out needs time to reabsorb evenly

Temperature plays a part too. E-liquid thickens in the cold, so a coil filled on a winter morning or left in a cold car will need more time than the same coil filled indoors. If your device manual gives a specific waiting time, follow that first, since it is written for your exact coil.

Priming a replaceable tank coil, step by step

Tank coils, also called coil heads, are the easiest to prime properly because you can see the cotton before the coil goes into the tank. Work over a tissue so stray drops do not land on your clothes or table.

  1. Take the new coil out of its packaging and look for the cotton. You will see it through small holes around the side of the coil, and sometimes through an opening at the top.
  2. Put one drop of e-liquid onto each visible patch of cotton. Watch it soak in. If the cotton drinks it up straight away, add another drop to each hole until the cotton looks damp but not flooded.
  3. Add a drop or two through the top opening if your coil has one, then stop. You want the wick saturated, not swimming. Flooding the coil here is what causes gurgling and spitback later.
  4. Fit the coil into the tank and fill the tank with e-liquid. Fill it at least past the level of the cotton holes so the wick can keep drawing liquid in.
  5. Leave the tank standing upright for the waiting time in the table above. Do not fire the device during this wait, even for a quick test.
  6. Take three or four gentle draws without pressing the fire button. These unpowered draws pull e-liquid into the wick and help finish the job. If you taste e-liquid on your lips, you overdid the dripping, so wipe the mouthpiece and carry on.
  7. Start vaping at the low end of the wattage range printed on the coil, then work up gradually. The ramp-up matters enough that it gets its own section below.

Priming a pod coil, step by step

Pod coils work the same way, but the method is slightly different because the cotton is usually hidden inside a sealed pod. You cannot drip directly onto it in most cases, so the fill and the wait do all the work.

  1. Open the fill port on the new pod and fill it with e-liquid. Do not overfill. Leave a small air gap so pressure inside the pod stays balanced and the pod does not leak.
  2. Close the fill port firmly and wipe away any drips around the seal.
  3. Insert the pod into the device, or leave it out if your device lets you prime the pod separately. Either way, keep the pod upright.
  4. Wait at least five minutes, longer for thick e-liquid. Resist the urge to test it early. A pod coil that looks full from the outside can still be dry in the middle.
  5. Take three or four gentle draws without firing, just as you would with a tank coil. With draw-activated pods, this means covering the airflow briefly or simply waiting, since you cannot draw without firing. In that case, give the pod extra waiting time instead.
  6. Take your first few puffs gently and at low power if your device lets you adjust it. Short, easy draws for the first minute let the wick settle into a steady rhythm of soaking and heating.

Some newer pod kits include a built-in priming mode that runs a short automatic cycle. If yours has one, use it in addition to the wait, not instead of it. The cycle helps, but it cannot replace a properly soaked wick.

The wattage ramp-up most people skip

Priming is only half the job. The other half is breaking the coil in gently. A freshly primed coil is saturated, but it still benefits from a gradual start, especially at higher wattages.

Begin at the bottom of the wattage range printed on the side of the coil or pod. Take a few short puffs there. If the flavour is clean and the vapour feels smooth, nudge the power up a little and repeat. Keep going until you reach your usual setting. The whole process takes about a minute, and it lets the cotton settle into heating evenly instead of being hit with full power while still finding its balance.

Jumping straight to maximum wattage is one of the fastest ways to scorch a coil you primed perfectly. High power vaporises liquid faster than the wick can replace it, so the cotton dries out mid-puff even though it started out soaked. If you are still working out what power suits your setup, our wattage guide walks through how coil resistance and e-liquid type change the right setting.

Primed or still dry? How to tell before you commit

You do not need to guess. A properly primed coil gives itself away, and so does a dry one, if you know what to check before your first real puff.

Signs the coil is ready

The cotton visible through the side holes looks evenly damp and slightly darker than dry cotton. The tank or pod level sits above the wicking holes. Your unpowered draws feel smooth, with no crackling or gurgling, and the first powered puff tastes clean and full.

Signs it needs more time

The cotton still shows pale, dry patches. Unpowered draws feel tight or produce a faint crackle. The first puff tastes thin, papery, or slightly harsh rather than flavourful. Stop straight away if you notice any of these. Put the device down, give it another five to ten minutes, and try again. One more wait is always cheaper than a replacement coil.

Signs the coil is already burnt

A harsh, acrid taste that does not fade after a few puffs means the cotton has scorched. No amount of extra soaking will fix burnt cotton, because the damage is in the fibres themselves. This is the point where priming stops being the answer and replacement starts.

Mistakes that burn coils anyway

Most burnt coils are not caused by skipping priming entirely. They are caused by small errors during an otherwise careful routine. These are the ones to watch for.

Firing to “test” the coil before it soaks

Even a single dry fire can scorch cotton. Never press the button to check that a new coil works until the wait is over. The coil will still be there in ten minutes. Its flavour might not be if you rush.

Drowning the coil instead of priming it

More e-liquid is not always better. Flooding the coil leads to gurgling, leaking, and e-liquid spitting into the mouthpiece. A damp wick is the goal. A puddle is not.

Chain vaping straight after priming

Taking puff after puff with no pause gives the wick no time to re-soak between draws. This is especially risky in the first few minutes, when the coil is still finding its rhythm. Leave a few seconds between puffs and the coil will last noticeably longer.

Vaping the tank down to empty

When the e-liquid level drops below the cotton holes, the top of the wick starts to dry out while you keep vaping. Refill before the tank gets that low, and the same applies to pods. Keeping liquid above the wick holes is one of the simplest habits that extends coil life.

Using the wrong e-liquid thickness for the coil

Very thick high VG liquid in a small mouth-to-lung pod coil soaks slowly and can starve the wick. Very thin liquid in a large sub-ohm coil can flood it. Matching liquid thickness to coil type is not just about flavour, it is about keeping the wick fed at the right rate.

When priming will not save a coil

Priming protects new coils. It does not resurrect dead ones. Replace the coil instead of re-priming it if any of these apply.

  • The burnt taste stays after a few puffs, even after a fresh fill and a proper wait.
  • Flavour has gone flat or muted and no longer recovers, which usually means residue has built up on the wire.
  • Vapour production has dropped sharply at your usual wattage.
  • The coil gurgles constantly or leaks despite correct filling, which can mean the cotton has broken down.
  • The coil has been in use for weeks and has simply reached the end of its life.

Knowing how long coils last helps you judge this call. A coil that is two days old and burnt was almost certainly under-primed. A coil that is three weeks old and fading has just done its job and earned retirement. Regular cleaning helps too, and our guide to cleaning your tank covers the routine that keeps the rest of your kit in good shape between coil changes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to prime a coil every time I refill?

No. Priming is for new, dry coils. Once a coil is in use and stays wet, refilling the tank or pod does not require the full routine. Just avoid letting it run dry, and give it a minute after a refill from empty before you vape.

Can I prime a coil by just filling the tank and waiting?

Yes, and for pods this is often the only option. Filling and waiting works well as long as you wait long enough for your e-liquid thickness. Drip-priming a tank coil first simply speeds the process up and gives you a visual check that the cotton is wet.

What happens if I forget to prime and take one puff?

One gentle puff on a dry coil may only taste harsh, but it can also scorch the cotton permanently. If the burnt taste lingers after a few more puffs, the coil is damaged and needs replacing. Do not keep vaping on it in the hope it improves, because it will not.

How many drops should I put on a new coil?

Two to three drops per visible cotton patch is plenty for most tank coils. Add a drop at a time and stop when the cotton looks evenly damp. For small pod coils you cannot drip onto, skip this step entirely and rely on the fill and wait method.

Does priming work for mesh coils?

Yes. Mesh coils still use a cotton wick, so the same principle applies. They just hold more cotton, which is why they benefit from a longer wait, especially with thick e-liquid. Do not rush a mesh coil because it looks saturated from the outside.

Why does my coil still taste burnt after priming?

The usual causes are firing too early, starting at too high a wattage, chain vaping before the wick settles, or a coil that was already damaged by a dry puff. Work through those in order. If the taste persists after a careful re-prime of a fresh coil, the problem may be the wattage setting or the e-liquid, not the priming itself.
