A Gloucester corner shop will stay closed until the new year after Trading Standards officers seized 100 illegal vapes, around 1,000 packs of illegal cigarettes and 160 pouches of hand-rolling tobacco from the premises. Magistrates granted a three-month closure order at a hearing on 14 October 2026, ordering the shop to remain shut until 13 January 2027.
The sting in Tredworth
The raid on Tuesday 13 October was intelligence-led. Trading Standards officers, backed by Gloucestershire Constabulary, acted on reports that a shop in the Tredworth area of Gloucester was selling illegal tobacco.
Investigators found the goods were deliberately kept away from the shelves. A test purchase confirmed the trick: when illegal products were requested, a shop worker left the premises to collect them from a nearby location and returned to complete the sale. Officers then executed entry warrants at two nearby premises, alongside an inspection of the shop itself.
What officers took away
The haul, estimated to be worth around £8,000 in sales had it stayed on the marke, included:
| Item | Amount seized |
|---|---|
| Illegal cigarette packs | Around 1,000 |
| Hand-rolling tobacco pouches | 160 |
| Illegal vapes | 100 |
| Cash | Around £1,000 |
The cash was also seized, and the Trading Standards investigation remains ongoing.

Three-month closure order
Gloucestershire Constabulary issued a closure notice for the shop and applied for a full closure order under the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. Magistrates granted the application the following day, keeping the premises closed for three months.
The move mirrors a recent Doncaster raid that also ended with a shop being closed over illegal sales.
What officials said
Cllr Paul Hodgkinson, the county council cabinet member responsible for Trading Standards, said the operation shows the council is serious about tackling the illegal trade. Inspector James O’Neill of the Gloucester Neighbourhood Policing Team said the force supports Trading Standards’ proactive approach.
Why this matters for vapers
Illegal vapes are often sold without the safety and labelling checks legal products must pass, and illegal tobacco sales undercut legitimate retailers while feeding an underground market. The seizure lands just ahead of the new UK vape rules taking effect on 29 October, which are tightening how vapes are sold.
